Qian Li Xiang Durian (Thyme)
Qian li xiang durian is a kampung durian from Johor that enters the market from time to time.
Qian li xiang (千里香) in Chinese literally means a fragrant aroma so strong that it can be smelled from 1000 miles away. But in this case, it is referring to the thyme herb that has a distinctive smell. It is used in condiments for cooking and also in TCM.
Thyme durian has a hint of thyme scent, and is supposedly known for it’s strong aroma that you’d get a whiff of when you get close.
I have not experienced this whenever I’ve encountered this durian. And I have to admit. The husk seems to look different on different occasions.
The fruitlets look a little like D13.
And the taste is bitter. While the durian flavour is mild.
You’d usually only find qian li xiang on the racks of street stalls in Johor. I have never noticed any of the big stores carrying it maybe because of low demand.
