Red Towel Durian
There are countless unnamed durians in Malaysia. Many of them don’t embody or exhibit attributes that appeal to the masses.
Some don’t make the cut due to the taste not being potent enough, some due to the colour not being attention-grabbing enough, some due to it being too fragile, etc.
But some kampung durians that don’t make the grade into mass consumption do possess traits that make them deserving of a name for itself.
Red towel is one such durian.
This is a pretty rare durian to come across in Penang.
The reason it has not gone mass market is mostly due to the texture being too soft. And when there are many other soft-textured durians that taste much more powerful in Penang, it’s very tough for red towel to snatch a piece of the action from the proven cultivars because it lacks uniqueness.
The flesh is soft, but not as soft as khun poh. The taste is a little somewhere between ang bak kia and ang jin.
Partly sweet and with just a subtle bitterness.
